Joanne Encarnacion, San Francisco, CA

Joanne is a mother of two daughters sharing her journey towards a happier and healthier life, one rep at a time.

Joanne became a mother at 21 and when her body changed dramatically after being pregnant she began slowly to hate my self image. She struggled getting into shape and paid little attention to her health.  Her low opinions of herself was something she believed to be modesty, until it  became a form of self hate that escalated into a form of self destruction and depression.

In July 2013, Joanne started a fitness/health journey with a coach. She struggled everyday, but did not allow her self-doubt win.  She began to feel more energized, happier, and the fighting spirit that was within her started to burn brighter.

This journey was about eating healthier, cleaner, and to view food as a way to fuel her body and nourish it for her workouts and cardio sessions. Now she hopes that by sharing her journey, you'll find a sense of connection to your own, where you can learn to love yourself enough to make the changes towards your dreams.

June 2015 Challenge: Being confident enough to work out in a public setting in a sports bra has always been a dream of mine, not because I wanted to show off my body, but because I wanted to be comfortable enough knowing I love being in my skin despite my flaws and insecurities. So tomorrow I say to hell with my fear. I'm going to #daretobare and train in my sports bra in the gym!

JOIN ME and my June #daretobarechallenge and get active in your sports bra and say: to hell with my fears, I'm going to show the world I love being in my skin, despite my imperfections!

Lindy Gault, Owner of Transform Fitness:  "I've ALWAYS had to work to stay in shape. People look at me now and probably think that I've always been slim, fit and confident with my body. But I haven't. I struggled with my body image and weight for many years and tried nearly every "quick fix" out there to get results. After years of doing things the wrong way I finally learned that true health and fitness comes from the little choices we make day in and day out and that so much of it begins in the mind with what we think about ourselves.

My mission is to help people transform their bodies and lives. I strive to meet people where they are, take them where they want to be, and help them become the best possible version of themselves - so that they are confident, healthy, and full of life!"   #BeTransformed

Niki's philosophy on being bold:  When you’re frightened of something and then you do it, your confidence expands. Being bold makes you want to be even bolder. It’s infectious and addictive. It’s shown me that making my decisions based on passion is okay.

Why she believes it's important for women to engage in outdoor sports:
A lot of us think that we have to have a man involved to instigate or to do things outdoors with because we can’t survive on our own in the backcountry: We don’t know how to start a fire or pitch a tent. But once you start doing that stuff either on your own or with a group of girlfriends, you realize that you can. It gives you a sense of independence, which is important at any age.

June 2015 Challenge:  This may come as a surprise to many of you, but those who know me well know that I am not the most confident when having my picture taken. I am reluctant at best. I’ve always felt that people fall into 2 categories, those who take selfies and those who don’t. I fall into the latter group. Mostly this is because I don’t consider myself to be particularly attractive (please read: not fishing for compliments). Working in the fitness industry, this is something that I battle almost everyday.

For my June challenge I’m going to take my own advice. I believe that the perception we have of ourselves is malleable. Confidence and pride have to come from the inside out. Each Saturday (to my chagrin) I will post one unfiltered selfie with the hope that, with time and practice, I’ll be comfortable looking at the image of myself. This is, after all, the face I wear every day! If you’re interested please join me!
